OUTREACH
The University of Michigan’s Department of Naval Architecture and Marine
Engineering, in collaboration with the Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratory (MHL), actively
engages with the community to inspire young engineers to discover the world of marine
engineering. They achieve this by organizing various activities, hands-on labs, and informative
tours.

MHL interns aid high school students in constructing the fastest miniature sailboat.
Women/Girls in Science and Engineering Camp
MHL interns assist middle and high school students in constructing and testing wind turbines to ascertain which design produces the highest voltage output.
Posse Foundation Summer Camp
The MHL hosts campers and MHL interns lead students in building miniature sailboats to be tested in the MHL Wind-Wave Tank.
Brick Elementary Polynesian Canoe Models
MHL interns and NAME students mentor elementary students in the design of Polynesian Canoes and facilitate testing in the MHL Wind-Wave Tank.
Emerson Robotics Team Tour
MHL interns and staff provide guided tours to elementary students at the Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratory, offering insights into its historical background.
